NYC Bureau Of Fraud Investigations

So, now you know who is a likely target of a Medicaid fraud investigation in New York. Now we’ll talk about who investigates New York Medicaid fraud amongst recipients.

The vast majority of all investigations are conducted by the Bureau of Fraud Investigations, located at 151 W. Broadway and 250 Church Street in Manhattan.

The Bureau of Fraud Investigations (BFI) is part of the Human Resources Administration and employs dozens of fraud investigators. While not police detectives, these people are trained to conduct investigations, collect evidence, and testify in court. The BFI is not a law enforcement organization but it works very closely with law enforcement agencies such as local District Attorneys, the NYC Department of Investigations, and the Attorney General’s Office. A few times I even saw them working with federal agents.

The BFI investigates not only Medicaid but also Food Stamp fraud, housing and Section 8 fraud, and other types of fraud committed against the HRA.

Once your case is flagged, the BFI will conduct a full investigation and in the end will send you a letter asking you to come and speak with investigators. Don’t underestimate them. Even though this is not police, speaking with these investigations may have the same effect as speaking with police. I’ve seen countless times case referred to criminal courts because clients made a mistake to speak with the HRA investigators.

Not convinced? Check out our video about speaking with investigators and police when you are a target of investigation.

When you receive an “interview letter” from the HRA, give me a call, you’ll be glad you did.
