What To Do When Visited By Fraud Investigators

Sometimes you know there is a problem when you have uninvited guests at your home or work. Two or more investigators show up at your door, flush their badges and tell you that they want to speak with you (or just go straight at asking you questions).

NYC Bureau of Fraud Investigations has been aggressively investigating Medicaid fraud amongst recipients. In many cases, the investigators will appear at their target’s doors. Sometimes, they ask questions, sometimes they speak with neighbors.

If you’re like most people, you will react with fear and stress, and you will end up speaking with them. This is terrible but not your fault. Every professional investigator knows this and uses this to his or her benefit. The reason it’s terrible to just speak with the agents is because you are likely to make self-incriminating statements without getting any benefit out of it. This is all they want from you, nothing more.

The only proper way to handle this situation is this:

  • Be polite
  • Don’t lie to the agents
  • Don’t discuss anything at all
  • Ask for their business cards
  • Tell them that your lawyer will contact them

This is all you need to remember. You need to be polite and firm. You should not let them look around the office or take anything from it unless they have a warrant. After the agents leave, contact our office to get help right away.
